Chapter 21

With his back to the sea, Ryan sat across from Jacob at the dining table. Maclean was to his side. The men had iced tea and lemon drinks. Ocean breezes spilled into the room from open windows.

"Ryan, I trust you studied the images and articles on Nathaniel Balder during your trek from Palm Springs," Jacob said.

"Yes, sir," Ryan answered.

"While I appreciate your vocalizations of respect, they are unnecessary. You may call me by my first name and I do not need to be addressed as 'sir' or anything else."

"Very well."

"Tell us what you read about Balder."

Ryan summarized the background information he found online during the drive from Palm Springs. He included information about Nathaniel's upbringing and hockey to his success with fighting. He also mentioned that he learned Nathaniel and Vicente were only days away from battling in what was being marketed as a grudge duel.

"Recent days have been enlightening," Jacob said. "We have had indications for a long time now that Balder is living, or at least full-time training, in Los Angeles. The reports were all over the map on his locations, so we began to believe that he was constantly moving—like one of those leaders being hunted down who never sleeps in the same bed twice. Actually, I had come to accept this scenario as being most likely."

"Why would he act so fearfully?" Ryan asked.

"Please withhold your questions and focus on what I am choosing to relay to you."

Ryan sighed, sank back in his chair, and folded his hands over his lap.

"No," Jacob asserted. "I am afraid you are off to a poor start here. Sit upright and stay alert."

Ryan responded immediately, obeying the directive.

"Thanks to Maclean here, we abandoned that theory," Jacob continued. "He insisted that Balder would opt for a stable routine, pointing out that with his team of bodyguards it would be too cumbersome to be perpetually on the move. Rather quickly, Maclean discovered Balder is here in Malibu."

"Quite nearby," Maclean added.

"Did you tell Ryan any of this during your walk on the beach?" Jacob asked Maclean.

"No," Maclean answered.

"We got as close as we could to Balder," Jacob said. "We wanted to get even closer, but renting this house is the best we could do on such short notice. About one hundred and fifty yards away, hillside instead of beachside, Balder is holed up with his security team in a large, modern house. However, the proximity is deceiving. Saying he is difficult to access is an understatement. Balder does not appear to leave the home without multiple bodyguards."

Ryan swallowed two large gulps of iced tea. Jacob seemed to be confirming Ryan's growing certainty that his assignment would be to gain access to Nathaniel.

"Balder is a man without weakness," Jacob continued. "He is a homosexual, though this is not publicly known. In this day and age, it may not matter—not even the world of fighting. But for us, it provides an opening. A possibility for an encounter. Unfortunately, Balder expressed no interest whatsoever in Maclean."

"That's crazy," Ryan blurted out.
